What is MeRT?
MeRT: Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy
MeRT, which stands for “Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy,” is a highly customized use of TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). Like other forms of TMS, MeRT is a painless, drug-free, noninvasive medical treatment. MeRT uses sophisticated diagnostics to create individualized treatment protocols that are tailored to a person’s unique brain wave patterns.
Our Latest Addition
Joyful Mind Mobile TMS proudly announces the addition of MeRT technology to our clinic. This is the newest of our broad range of TMS therapies. It is the latest step in Dr. Makar’s vision to offer all the best, cutting-edge TMS treatments to his patients. Dr. Makar offers MeRT in collaboration with the Brain Treatment Center.
The MeRT Story
MeRT was developed in the late 2000’s by a group of scientists at Wave Neuroscience. Wave Neuroscience is a biotechnology software company headquartered in Newport Beach, California. Its President and Chief Medical Officer is Dr. Erik Won.
The first clinic to offer MeRT treatments was The Brain Treatment Center in Newport Beach, California. Its owner and Medical Director is Dr. Julie Kim. Starting with its flagship location in Newport Beach, The Brain Treatment Center has added locations throughout the United States and internationally, in a total of 12 countries.
Joyful Mind Mobile TMS is proud to be The Brain Treatment Center’s Mobile Clinic for the Austin Area (Texas).
The MeRT Process
The “e” in MeRT stands for EEG with EKG (Electroencephalogram with Electrocardiogram). This is the sophisticated diagnostic test that MeRT uses to tailor treatment to each individual patient.
MeRT uses a 3-step process to deliver state-of-the-art TMS treatments that are customized to each patient.
-
The first step is an EEG with EKG (Electroencephalogram with Electrocardiogram). The EEG with EKG is a painless, noninvasive medical test. Every moment that we are alive, our brains create waves of electricity. Electricity and magnetism are the language of the brain.
The EEG “listens” to the patient’s brain waves, to determine their rhythms. (The EEG cannot detect thoughts.) At the same time, the EKG “listens” to how the heart is synchronized with the brain.
-
The second step is that the EEG/EKG results are sent to the sophisticated, artificial intelligence computer lab at Wave Neuroscience. The software creates a visual image of the brain waves, and recommends a treatment protocol.
At this point, Dr. Makar meets with the patient for a consultation. Based on his 12 years of in-depth experience delivering cutting-edge TMS treatments, he will use his clinical judgment to recommend what is best for this individual patient.
-
The third step is the actual TMS treatment. The patient will receive a series of daily TMS treatments, using the MagVenture TMS machine, programmed with the patient’s unique treatment protocol. Every two weeks, there is another EEG to evaluate progress and guide future treatments.
Meet Dr. Makar’s cutting-edge EEG machine
Dr. Makar’s newest EEG machine uses cutting-edge technology. Not long ago, EEG machines were the size of large refrigerator. Dr. Makar’s “Deymed” EEG machine is sophisticated electronics in miniature: a handheld “headbox” and a wired cap that is fitted to the patient. (Various cap sizes are available for adults and children.) This “Deymed” EEG machine has a different look, but the same advanced technology as the “Zeto” EEG machines shown in the videos below.
What is the status of MeRT with the FDA?
MeRT is an emerging technology that aims to improve brain function and communication. The equipment used in MeRT is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off-label to treat a wide variety of conditions. FDA clearance studies for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are ongoing.
MeRT is also used off-label for ADHD, Learning Disorders, Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Anxiety, and other brain disorders.
Can MeRT help me?
For 26 years, Dr. Makar has specialized in treating children with autism and/or ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder). He has achieved excellent results. He is committed to providing the best, cutting-edge treatments for people on the autism spectrum, both children and adults. This is a major reason that he has added MeRT to his practice.
There is no cure for autism. However, MeRT has achieved incredible success in reducing the symptoms of autism.
Cutting-edge TMS Technologies
Dr. Makar offers a full range of cutting-edge TMS technologies for many neuropsychiatric symptoms—physical and mental health.
We invite you to book a consultation with him to learn how he can help you via MeRT or other TMS therapies.
